Santander to close 44 branches across the UK – full list of affected locations
Santander will cut its network to just 305 branches following the closures
Santander has announced it is closing 44 more bank branches, just a year after setting out plans to shut 95.
The major Spanish bank will reduce its network from 349 to 305 between April 2026 and January 2027. Santander had 444 UK branches in March 2025.

Santander will also continue to run 111 “Santander Locals”, which are held in places like libraries and community halls one day a week and offer customers banking services.
The bank said the 44 closing branches will be replaced by “Community Bankers” who can offer face-to-face support to customers in banking hubs and Santander Locals.
Why is Santander closing branches?
Santander is closing the 44 full-service branches as it diversifies its network, including the rollout of Work Cafes, opening its largest to date in Oxford in December.
The bank said it is investing tens of millions of pounds in refurbishing hundreds of branches and, by the end of 2026, 80% of this work will be complete.
Its mobile banking app, online banking service, chat service and telephone banking facilities are also being modernised and improved.
Santander said an increasing number of its customers are heading online to carry out their banking activities, with 96% of all transactions now completed digitally.
Since 2019, the bank has seen a 64% rise in digital transactions, while financial transactions completed in branches reduced by 66% in the same period.
Thousands of bank branches close over last decade
Bank branches have closed in their thousands in the last decade as the push to online banking continues.
Between January 2015 and January 2025, banks and building societies closed 6,693 branches between them, recent research by Which? found.
Separate data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reveals the number of operational bank branches fell from 14,689 to 5,745 between 2012 and 2023.
But while banks say the closures are justified as more customers do their banking online now, it can leave some people without access to services.
In May 2023, a survey of 2,632 people aged 65 years and older, published by charity Age UK, showed 39% were not digital bankers and could be at “high risk of financial exclusion” following bank branch closures.
Sam Richardson, deputy editor of consumer champion Which?, said: “Bank branch closures have a real impact on local communities – especially on those customers who rely on in-person services and aren't yet ready or willing to make the switch to digital banking.”
What you can do if your local branch is closing
If you prefer in-person banking, rather than using online or mobile banking services, you may wonder what your options are if your local branch closes.
You can carry out most basic banking tasks at your nearest Post Office, although you won’t be able to apply for a loan or open a new bank account there.
Some banks offer a mobile branch service – a bus that comes to your area offering services you can usually get at a physical branch.
Other banks use buildings such as village halls or libraries to offer banking services.
It’s worth contacting your bank to see what services they have available, and when they might next be in your area.
You could also see if there is a banking hub in your local area. The Post Office has a list of all the operational hubs on its website.
Lastly, you could switch your current account to a bank or building society that has branches closer to you.

HSBC and Nationwide Building Society have pledged to keep their remaining bank branches open until 2027 and 2030, respectively, so they may be worth switching to if you want a guarantee your local branch will stay open, at least for the time being.
