A stunning red to order by the lorry-load

The Gum Adelaide Hills Shiraz

2007 The Gum Adelaide Hills Shiraz, South Australia (£9.99, reduced to £7.99 until 31 January, Marks & Spencer).

This is the third wine from this hallowed property to grace this column so far in my massively enjoyable two-and-a-half-year tenure at MoneyWeek. The problem for you, dear wine lover, is that you wouldn't know it from the label, because 'The Gum' is a brand name made-up by the wizards at M&S.

This wine is, in fact, made by a winery that the eagle-eyed of you will be very familiar with – The Lane. I adore every wine that emanates from this epic property in the Adelaide Hills, and you have already partaken of the pinot gris and the chardonnay from UK agents Corney & Barrow.

It is, however, their stunning, forward, plum- and cinnamon-scented, cool-climate shiraz which is the subject of this week's inspection, and it is half the price of The Lane's flagship wines, too!

Thanks to a generous M&S sale price, The Gum is the same price as a pedestrian Côtes du Rhône, so do not buy another bottle of red wine this week until you have supped from this cup. When you have slotted a bottle away I have no doubt that you will order a lorry-load to be delivered today.
