Huvafen Fushi in the Maldives offers privacy on a glorious reef

Some holiday resorts just ooze romance. Here are two perfect destinations to visit with that special someone.

Relax in the Maldives

For secluded luxury, the Maldives are hard to beat – just the place for honeymooners. If you want "white sand islets all to yourself, and butlers bringing you punch while you paddle", then Huvafen Fushi won't let you down, says The Daily Telegraph. The hotel is located on its own lagoon and every room has a private plunge pool. For "maximum privacy", the best rooms are the Ocean and Lagoon Bungalows, set on a long pier off the island. The Ocean Bungalows have glass floors in the lounge, allowing you to watch the ever-changing life on the reef 24 hours a day. And for an even better view of the marine life – and a relaxing massage – don't miss the hotel's underwater spa, which has two glass-walled treatment rooms located beneath the waves.

The hotel has six restaurants waiting to cater to your every whim. So brides who have spent the past few weeks dieting to fit into their wedding dress have no shortage of culinary treats to choose from. And if you're worried about getting bored on such a secluded holiday – don't be. World-class scuba diving is – quite literally – on your doorstep in the form of the local reef and you can charter the hotel's boat for some fun on the surface.

• Rooms cost from $880 in low season to $1,320 in high season, excluding a daily government tax of $8 pp. For more information, call 00 960 6644 222, or see www.huvafenfushi.com .

Celebrate in Italy

"Nowhere throws itself into a celebration better" than Italy, says Susan d'Arcy in The Sunday Times Travel Magazine, making this the ideal location for a proposal, wedding, or anniversary celebration. Villa Feltinelli, an Art Deco palazzo on the banks of Lake Garda, "screams special occasion", says d'Arcy. The setting is wonderful: Lake Garda is one of Italy's most beautiful landscapes, but less touristy than Lakes Como and Maggiore. As for the palazzo itself, the attention to detail puts it into the top tier of the world's luxury hotels. Rooms are decorated with handpainted frescoes and antique furniture, while the free laundry service returns your clothes wrapped in tissue, tied with silk ribbon and decorated with a sprig of lavender.

• Rooms from €850 a night including breakfast. Contact: 00 39 0365 798 000, www.villafeltrinelli.com .
