Morgan: a great British classic

Morgan 4/4 sports car

First introduced in 1936, the Morgan 4/4 has been in production for longer than any other car, says Andrew English in The Daily Telegraph.

It's far from perfect: the ride is hard, the steering kicks back in your hands as you go over bumps, and, by modern standards, it's pretty slow and uncomfortable. But it's hard not to love the car nevertheless.

It feels much faster than it is, and the latest, much lighter versions have improved ride and handling. It's good, involving fun and more capable than you'd think, agrees John Simister in Evo.

"Of course, the 4/4 Sport is inept by most modern standards, and Morgan knows that perfectly well. But that's not the point; being transported out of time is."

Morgan has an irresistible intimacy, says English, that sucks you in until you can think of a reason you must buy one. Here's just one: it's the most economical sports car in the world. And now, waiting lists are down to just six months. Price: £27,000.

The design and the dashboard instruments are period items, says English, "clear and easy on the eye" and with a "simplicity that seems right".
