A unique, old-school Porsche

Porsche 911

It’s hard to believe, given the large number of different models in Porsche’s 911 range, that we have never seen a Spyder version, says Richard Meaden in Evo. There has never before been a completely roofless 911 – until now.

Paul Stephens, an Essex-based Porsche specialist, has created this one-off alloy-bodied car from a 1989 911 Targa he picked up last summer. After more than 2,000 hours of labour, the Targa was transformed into this 911 Spyder. To drive, it’s “an addictive blend of old-school 911 handling and a very healthy power-to-weight ratio”. The “levels of grip and power are so well balanced you can make the Spyder dance to your tune at less than breakneck speeds. In short, it’s terrific fun.”

Although you don’t get much in the way of protection from the elements, you don’t get the buffeting you may expect either, says Joe Breeze on the Classic Driver website. Occupants sit lower in the Spyder than in a Targa and the driver is also seated more centrally than in a standard 911, meaning the offset pedals are less of a nuisance.

There are “subtle but effective changes” like this throughout, showcasing the incredible craftmanship of Paul Stephen’s company. The car will be put up for sale early this year, and interested parties can contact him on 01440-714884 or via his website at www.paul-stephens.com.
