Steelmaker Corus is sacking 1,700 people after confirming its 150-year-old plant in Teesside will close next year.

The company, which first flagged the decision in May, said it had been forced into the move by the failure of four buyers to stick to a deal requiring them to purchase 80% of production for ten years.

Work will stop in January, but Corus will still employ about 2,000 in the area.

Kirby Adams, chief executive of Corus and Corus-owner Tata Steel Europe said: "We are acutely aware that this will be devastating news for our employees, our contractors, their families and the local community."

"We extend our sincere gratitude to all of them, as well as to the management team and the trade unions on Teesside, who have all worked night and day to try and avoid this outcome."

About 6,700 jobs have now been announced at the Anglo-Dutch firm this year.

Derek Simpson, joint general secretary of the Unite union, called it "a dark day for British manufacturing".
