John Lewis has had its strongest week of the year so far despite some rotten weather, with record demand for white goods pushing sales up 17.1% at the department stores chain.

Sales hit £71.98m in the week to 14 November, led by the electricals department where sales leapt 20%. White goods posted their strongest ever non-Clearance week, while upholstery had its biggest week for two years.

Shoppers also headed for the clothes racks, lifting fashion sales by 19.5%, and to the home department, which boasted a 15.5% increase on last year.

Business was brisk at Bluewater. Its sales leapt by almost 23%, while Trafford boasted a 21% increase.

Supermarket business Waitrose also continues to thrive. Sales there jumped 20.6% to £91.17m as food sales finished "significantly up" on the same week last year.

TNS data recently revealed the upmarket chain had the fastest growth rate in the sector for the 12 weeks ending 1 November at 12.3%.

That beat the market average of 4.4% and was the firm's best performance since September 2005.

The combined effort put John Lewis Partnership sales at £163.15m, up 19% on a year ago.
