December property sales jump

In line with the recent string of housing market surveys, an official government report shows the number of property transactions in England and Wales rose in December.

Britain's HM Revenue and Customs reported that the number of property transactions rose to 153,000 in December from an upwardly revised 152,000 in November.

Though the data is a lagging indicator of the housing market - reflecting the completion of house purchases - it supports the view that the market is picking up.

The figures are also used to assess a likely pick up in spending on household appliances and furniture that people tend to buy after a purchasing a new home.
