House prices rose for the first time in 18 months in December, according to the latest survey from property website Hometrack.
Average prices rose by 0.1% in December, it said, lowering the average cost of a house to £160,900, about 1.6% below this time last year.

"A move to more realistic pricing over the past 12 months and improving buyer confidence has resulted in this small increase in average house prices," said Hometrack.
It added that housing activity had picked up over the second half of 2005. It expects house prices to rise by 1% in 2006.
