Petrol prices lift US retail sales
US retail sales rose 0.2% in March, after sliding 0.4% in February, thanks to the soaring cost of petrol which led to a 1.1% rise in the value of sales at petrol stations.
The Commerce Department said that without the effect of sales at petrol stations, the index would have shown no change from February's level. Petrol is now retailing at about $3.25 a gallon in the USA; the US liquid gallon is equivalent to about 3.79 litres.
