Three trips for intrepid travellers
If you like your holidays to include a sun lounger, a good book and poolside drinks, you may want to turn the page now. However, if you judge a good holiday by the number of pills and vaccinations you need before you go, then read on. This week we take a look at the truly adventurous expeditions available to the more intrepid traveller.
If you are an astronomy buff with £100,000 to spare, you can watch this summer’s lunar eclipse from the best seats in the world, the “rugged and inaccessible” Altai mountains in Mongolia. A bespoke trip will be arranged for you to trek through the region on horseback with Kazak nomads for guides. And when it’s time for the lunar eclipse, your own personal astronomer will be on hand to answer your questions. For more information contact Quintessentially Escape (020-7758 3370).
For those of you who worshipped Indiana Jones as a child, you can step into Harrison Ford’s shoes with a 12-day adventure through the Guatemalan rainforest. The itinerary involves an 80-mile trek (this is not a trip for the faint-hearted) to get to “a lost temple deep in the Guatemalan rainforest”, says Chris Haslam in The Sunday Times. The temple is actually the ancient Mayan site of La Mirador. After all that exertion, the trip concludes with two days recuperation at Francis Ford Coppola’s Turtle Inn resort in Belize. The trip costs £2,355, all-inclusive, with Journey Latin America (020-8747 8315).

For those who really want to venture into the unknown, there are sadly very few uncharted territories left on Earth. However, head to the Antarctic and you’ll discover a continent that still holds mystery and just enough danger to get the pulse racing. Especially if you go on the expedition ship, the Kapitan Khlebnikov, “the only tour ship in Antarctica capable of punching through the pack ice to the [penguin] breeding colony at Snow Hill Island”, says The Sunday Times.
Once you have been dropped on the island – either by boat or helicopter, depending on the weather – you can see the 8,000 Emperor Penguins who call the island home, a treat that a total of only 50 British people witnessed last year. The trip lasts 17 days and costs £9,595 with Exodus (0845-863 9600).
