Pearson's Arculus buys in after results

05.03.2008

This genius investor does dizzying levels of research to uncover...Half Price Shares!

David Arculus, a non-executive director at Pearson, spent more than £50,000 on shares in the publishing group, after they fell sharply following the company's results on Monday.

Arculus, who has also worked with media companies Emap and United Business Media, bought 8,000 shares in the Financial Times publisher for 645p each, taking his total holding to 10,223 shares.

Although Pearson posted record full year figures helped by strong growth in all its businesses, investors were unimpressed with future growth prospects.

For the year to December, pre-tax profit rose to £468m, from £448m before, on sales that increased 6% to £4.2bn, even though currency adjustments reduced sales by £228m.

However, Pearson said margins from sales of school textbooks in 2008 are expected to be similar to 2007 due to integration costs.

In 2009 it expects school margins to rise to around 15% as the majority of the integration costs fall away.
