Three romantic getaways for Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, bringing with it a glut of red roses and sundry other tack. If you’re feeling romantic but want to avoid the February 14th clichés, then here are some alternative getaways.

Dubrovnik provides the perfect medieval setting for seduction. It offers “architectural beauty wherever you look”, says Jamie MacLean in The Observer, with “enough piazzas, campaniles and cupolas... quiet cloisters and cool churches to keep you and your partner in a state of wonder”.

For a stimulating aperatif, head to Buza 2 outside the city walls. This is “one of the world’s most precarious bars”, says MacLean, and offers a great view of sunset over the ocean. The Grand Villa Argentina (00 385 20 353353) affords old-fashioned grandeur at a reasonable price, with doubles starting from £145.

Adventurous lovers could trek the Inca Trail. “Not only will you feel rather worthy but you’ll find the experience bonding – and end up in one of the world’s most spectacular settings,” says Francisca Kellet in The Daily Telegraph. Of course, the prospect of a long mountain trek is a lot more romantic if there’s a luxurious place to lay your weary head at the end of it. The Sanctuary Lodge, right beside Machu Picchu, fits the bill perfectly. For those planning to get down on one knee, Kellet suggests watching the sun rise over the ancient ruins: “the mist-shrouded Inca structures, early-morning Andean light and your spontaneous proposal should prove utterly intoxicating”.

A week in Peru, taking in the Inca Trail and staying at Sanctuary Lodge, costs from £3,810 per person with Journey Latin America (020-8747 8315).

For an idyllic setting closer to home head to the Lake District. The magnificent mountain vistas provide an ideal backdrop for Valentine’s Day. At the day’s end retire to Gilpin Lodge where “a Michelin-starred restaurant, crackling open fires and immaculate service” await, says Rhiannon Batten in The Independent. And for that extra bit of romance, stay in one of the garden suites which come complete with outdoor hot tubs. Doubles cost from £270 a night including a five-course dinner and breakfast. Garden suites cost from £360 (call 01539-488818).
