Commodities: Gold rises but off earlier highs

Gold futures neared a record $900 an ounce but retreated from earlier highs as oil prices slipped and the dollar recovered.
An ounce of gold for February delivery rose $1.40 to $881.80 on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
It had soared to a record intra-day high of $894.40 an ounce before prices retreated as investor's bagged profits.

Crude prices fell as higher gasoline supplies offset a slide in crude stockpiles. A barrel of oil was down 66 cents to settle at $95.67.
US crude inventories dropped by 6.8m to 282.8m barrels last week, the lowest in more than three years. Gasoline supplies rose by 5.3m barrels.
