The latest official house price report from the government indicates that prices accelerated in December pushing the price of the average home above £200,000.

The Department for Communities & Local Government said its official house price index shows prices were rising at an annual pace of 9.9% in December, up from 8.8% in November.

According to the government report, which tends to lag other indicators, the average UK house price now stands at £201,090.

Other house price surveys from mortgage lenders Halifax and Nationwide maintain that the average UK home costs around £188,623 and £173,325 respectively.

The highest average house price is still to be found in London, averaging £296,160, with annual price inflation in the capital running at 11.8%.
