A new quarterly survey has suggested that the average British house now costs more than £200,000, well above current price expectations.

New quarterly figures from the Land Registry, which has monitored sales between July and September, show the average price rose 9% on the year to £211,453.

The Land Registry's recent monthly report for October revealed prices averaging only £169,569.

A spokeswoman said the two reports were not comparable as the quarterly figure accounts for all sales while its monthly survey only takes into account repeat sales since 2000.

The most expensive county in which to live is Surrey with the average house price now costing £351,000, while only three areas in England and Wales still have an average price below £100,000.
